Digital Media: Literacy's New Frontier

Renowned children’s science author Seymour Simon and award-winning children’s media producer Liz Nealon have joined forces to make a unique presentation to educators, librarians, and professionals in children’s books and other media, developing a talk for the Indiana State Reading Association convention in March, 2008.

In their seminar, Simon and Nealon will use examples from their own work (enduring hits as well as new projects) to talk about how educators and librarians can use the many different kinds of media available to children today to engage and support both new and reluctant readers and writers. These digital natives (as opposed to us digital immigrants) need non-linear and highly creative learning materials. This model of learning through media is beginning to reach its true potential as broadband Internet access and kid-friendly tools for content creation are increasingly available in many schools and homes. Simon and Nealon will discuss and demonstrate ways to use these tools to reach a wide audience of kids who will learn while enjoying themselves.
