aneroid barometer:
An instrument used to measure air pressure. It is made by removing some of the air from a sealed metal container and attaching a pointer to the container. As air pressure squeezes the container together, the pointer moves to show the pressure on a nearby scale. In the barograph, another kind of aneroid barometer, the pointer is used to draw a line on a slowly moving drum, providing a continuous record of the atmospheric pressure. The aneroid is also used in aircraft altimeters, which show altitude (height above sea level).
