aurora:
Flickering, colored lights in the atmosphere that are caused by electrons trapped in Earth’s magnetic field. The aurora borealis, also called the northern lights, are seen over arctic regions; the aurora australis, also called the southern lights, are seen over Antarctic regions. [Aurora is the Latin word for “dawn” and also the name of the Roman goddess who brought the morning sun into the sky.]
