hail:

Frozen raindrops that look like pellets of ice. Hail forms in thunderclouds, where raindrops are frozen; they grow in size as they are tossed about by strong winds. Hailstones are larger pellets or balls of hail that fall during a hailstorm. Hailstones may grow as large as oranges or grapefruit. [Hail comes from a Greek word meaning “pebble.”]
