iceberg:

A large mass of ice floating in the ocean. Icebergs break off, or “calve,” from glaciers that reach the sea. In the Southern Hemisphere, huge flat pieces of ice break off the Antarctic ice sheet and form icebergs that may be 100 miles (160 kilometers) or more across. In the Northern Hemisphere, icebergs are smaller and more chunky. About nine tenths of an iceberg lies below the surface of the water and poses a danger to ships that come too close. In 1912, The Titanic collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank in a few hours. More than 1,500 people lost their lives.
