insect:

Any of a group of small animals with three pairs of jointed legs and three body parts; the head, thorax, and abdomen. Insects usually have one or two pairs of wings at some time during their life. Flies, grasshoppers, butterflies, beetles, ants, and bees are insects, but spiders, centipedes, and millipedes are not. There are over a million different kinds of insects, more than all other kinds of animals put together.
