jet stream:

A high-speed air current that usually travels from west to east at altitudes of seven to fifteen miles. Jet streams move in wavelike motions at speeds ranging from 100 to 300 miles (160 to 480 kilometers) per hour. They influence the movement of weather systems around the world. Aircraft traveling eastward sometimes fly along with a jet stream to increase their speed.
