1. ANATOMY. A place in the body where two or more bones are joined or connected so that they can move freely. Hinge joints, such as in the fingers or elbow, allow a back-and-forth motion. Ball-and-socket joints, such as in the hip or shoulder, allow a rotary motion. 2. BOTANY. In plants, the part of a stem where a branch or leaf grows.
