A hollow organ that is part of the digestive system in vertebrates. It serves as a receptacle for food and a place where digestion begins. In humans, the stomach is a large, muscular part of the alimentary canal between the gullet and the small intestine. The lining of the stomach contains glands that secrete gastric juices and hydrochloric acid, which begins to digest food. In invertebrates, any part of the body able to digest food.
