marsupial:

Any of an order of mammals characterized by a pouch covering the mammary glands on the abdomen. Kangaroos, koalas, opossums, and wombats are marsupials. Australia has many marsupials; a few are found in North and South America, but none in Africa or Eurasia. [Marsupial comes from a Greek word meaning “little bag” or “purse.”]
