prairie:
A broad, flat grassy plain with few trees. Prairies are found in the Midwestern United States and Canada. In Europe and Asia, similar grasslands are called steppes. In South America, particularly Argentina, they are called pampas. [Prairie comes from an Old French word meaning “tract of meadowland.”]
