mantle:

1.ZOOLOGY. The fold or flap of soft material in the body wall of a mollusk. The mantle contains glands that make the material which forms the shell. Also, the back feathers and folded wings of a bird. 2. ANATOMY. The outer layer of gray matter—also called the cortex—of the brain’s cerebrum. 3. EARTH SCIENCE. The layer of a planet that lies between the crust and the core. [Mantle comes from a Latin word meaning “cloak.”]
