Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A device that produces a narrow and intense beam of light. Light rays usually spread out in all directions, but in lasers the light rays are in step with each other and move in the same direction. Laser light is used in holography; in cutting or melting hard materials; in surgery; in compact disc players; and in transmitting communication signals, among many other functions.
